MINING INTELLIGENCE.

Tlie Bruce Herald says :—“ For some days past considerable excitement bas been created in and around the neighborhood of the Woolsbed and outlying diggings by a report that a new and rich gold-field had been discovered somewhere in the Tuapeka district, and many were the surmises as to its whereabouts and probable richness. Conjecture, however, has been set at rest by authentic information having been received that the site of the new discovery is some’ 16 miles from Tuapeka, and 6 from the Beaumont Ferry, the best route it is said, being' by the Devil’s Backbone. At the time of our informant’s visit, there were some 200 people on the ground, and a store had aim been erected. The diggings are both quartz and alluvial. We hate heard some extraordinary accounts of their richness, but until the receipt of absolutely reliable information, .we decline to be the medium of giving them publicity,” The same paper reports that:—“ There is a rumor current that the Government are thinking of making a road at the Canada quartz reef. It appears that the Government have the power to take a road in any direction and of any width through unsurveyed land when purchased, and, finding themselves victims of a little sharp practice, are determined to use all the means .at their disposal to protect the prospectors and company, as well as the Government, from loss. They will, therefore, lay out a road alongAhe reef, which will effectually prevent it falHug into private hands.”
