RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before A. C. Strode, Esq., R.M.) DRUNKJEJSTISrESS. An inebriate named James Sullivan was mulcted in the usual penalty. CIVIL GASES. E. Petherick v. Wm. Blackwood, claim of £l4 for balance of money due on a contract. The defendant pleaded indebted in the sum of £2, and disputed the remainder. The plaintiff entered into a contract with the defendant to slate and plumb his house for the sum of £6B, of which he received £64, and now Sought to recover the balance. The defence was that the contract for the slating was for the sum of £3B, and that of plumbing for £lB, making a total of £56, the whole of which had been paid excepting the two pounds admitted. Mr Robinson, who was entrusted by the defendant to superintend'the works, .proved having, at Mrs Blackwood’s request drawn up an agreement wherein the plaintiff agreed to do the work for the sum of £56. M-rs Blackwood corroborated the statement of the last witness. The Magistrate considered the evidence in favor of the defendant, and gave judgment for plaintiff in the sum of £2 and costs. Thomas Healy v. Dunlop and M‘Donald, claim of £5 for timber. From the evidence given it appeared that the timber had been supplied to the defendants by a man named Corking, and not by the plaintiff - . Case dismissed. In the following cases judgment by default was given for the amount claimed and costs :—- James Turner v. John Patten, £l7 17s for groceries. Arch. Muir v. Thos. Watson, £3 os for drapery. Barron, Grant and Co. v. W„ Raynor, £3 6s lOd for groceries. J. M'Neil Simpson v. Thouejnan and Oliver (interim so* questrators in the estate of Edgar £1 5s lOd for meat.
