VOLUNTEERS' COLUMN.

The Council of tlie Otago Rifle Association met on Saturday evening, and finally settled the programme of the forthcoming meeting, commencing at the Kaikori butts on the 6th January. It was decided that the cups given by the Daily Times and the Evening Star' should remain the property of the winner, and not as last year be subjected a second time to competition. It was further determined to exclude'from the contest all Government medium rifles (General Hay's, 1864). The Southland Times says :—" We understand that, in order to encourage the Volunteer movement throughout New Zealand, the General Government have determined on giving prizes to the best marksmen in the various Provinces at rifle matches shortly to be -held for that purpose."
