MINING INTELLIGENCE .
The accounts from the Tuapeka district are very encouraging. The various sluicing parties are all actively engaged. Morison and Co., at the Blue Spur, have had a very successful blast, upwards of 450,000 cubic feet of stuff having been brought down. At Riches claim they are still engaged washing down, but expect to be finished about the end of the week. The washing includes twelve months’ work, and five hundred ounces is talked of as the amount likely to be realized. Luke and party are at present engaged washing down 13 weeks’ work, after which they propose to commence taking up the bottom. Although the amount they expect to realise by this washing has not been stated, the shareholders are all sanguine of a very fair return. The last washing up for the same period as the present on® realised over 300 ounces. A gutter thirty feet deep of red cement composed of heavy boulders and course gravel runs through the centre of this claim, which is found to yield very well. Although upon an average they only employ fort-five inches of water, the fall they have got for their head and tail race enables them to put a gobd deal of stuff through. The Nelson Company purpose commencing a six months’ washing-up about Christmas. Accounts lately received from the Quartz Reef at Canada Bush continue to be satisfactory. A considerable quantity of broken reef has been accumulated, and with the view of having its actual value immediately put to the test application was made to the managers of the Otago Pioneer Quartz Crushing Company at Waipori to be allowed to pass two tons of the new reef beneath their stampers. The shareholders of the Company could not, however, see their way to comply with this request, so that no proper test of its real value is likely to take place until the discoverers have provided themselves with the requisite machinery. This is to be got shortly; five stampers are talked of to be driven by a large overshot water-wheel.
