The Evening Star. DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, DEC. 5, 1865.

OTAGO eight per cent, debentures are quoted in London at par. The following is a return of the gross amount of -gold shipped by the three banks having branches in Hokitika, since the commencement of their operations there. It is impossible to arrive at anything like an approximate of the quantity - that has been carried out by private hands :—Union Bank, 30,751 ozs. ; Bank of New Zealand, 75,943 ozs. ; Bank of New South Wales, 74,406 ozs. ; total, 177,140 ozs. ; estimated value, £545,245. The Alhambra has given our fruiterers’ windows and produce stores a very cheerful appearance. The cherries and apricots received by Mr C. Grey in the Cutting are in splendid condition, and reflect credit upon the shippers for their careful packing. Onions which have been very scarce, are now in good supply, and are advertised by Messrs Boyle and Co,, * ‘ Cheap for cash.” • In the Supreme Court this morning John Hutclpnson (18) convicted on Lis own confession of two charges of forgery, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Thomas-Rogers, convicted -Hof stealing a roll of woollen plaid, was sentenced rjjp one year’s imprisonment. .Donald M‘Donnell,

charged with stealing money at the Upper Taieri Hotel, was found guilty ; sentence deferred.

Madame Tournear took her benefit at the Californian Circus last night, and was patronised by such an audience as only assembles on special occasions. The theatre was filled in every part, and amongst the occupants of tne dress circle, there was a large number of the elite of Dunedin. The programme was varied, and its arrangment on the whole excellent, with the exception perhaps of the appearance in the pit of a disguised individual, who pretended to be inebriated, and insisted upon making his way to the stage, and exhibiting his really clever equestrianism in a somewhat vulgar style. This old and worn-ont joke—to dignify it by calling it so—might be highly acceptable at such places as Greenwich Fair, but could, we think, have been judiciously omitted from the programme last night. Certainly, a supposed-to-be intoxicated man is under no circumstances a desirable exhibition at a respectable place of amusement. Madame Tournear excelled herself by her elegant performances, and received the warmest applause of the audience. Her walking and posturing on the tight rope were something novel to those present, and afforded an additional proof of the talent of this clever artiste. Signor Raphael was exceedingly good in his various acts, and Mons. Klaer and his pupil Master James did the trapeze performance with much grace and considerable skill. Altogether the entertainment was a capital one, and we believe was as gratifying to the audience as the compliment of their presence was to the fair heneficiaire. The dumber of new accounts opened last night at the Savings Bank was seven. The deposits amounted to £257 15s 6d, the withdrawals «£153 16s Id.
