PUBLIC HOLIDAY TO-MORROW.

To-morrow, being the anniversar}" of the birth of the Prince of Wales, has been set aside as a public holiday. The various Government Offices, Banks, and no doubt most of the warehouses and shops will be closed. The different public bodies have taken advantage of the day for providing amusement and recreation of appropriate character, and many private opportunitiesibr enjoyment are also offered. Most prominent in the days amusements is the

Forester's fete at Vauxhall Gardens, which promises to be a decided success. The beautiful gardens are unequalled in affording advantages for rural festivity at a short distance from the city. Steamers 'will ply to and from the gardens during I the day at a cheap rate, and the amusements provided are numerous and attractive. A capital band will " discourse most I excellent music" in the pavillion, whilst on ! the plateau there m ill be games of skill | and athletic sports for muscular visitors. The rifle gallery presents the temptation of a shooting match for valuable prizes, open to all comers, and the enclosed baths invite swimmers to a "dip in the briny." The fete is under the patronage of his I Honor the Superintendent, his Worship the Mayor, the various Lodges of Odd Fellows, the Directors of the Caledonian Society, the Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Highland Company, and Captain Moss and members of No. 1 Company of Volunteers. The new Volunteer Brigade Band numbering about thirty-six will turn o\it in the morning and play the Forester's down to the jetty. The members of the order will assemble at the Royal George -Hotel, at half-past 10 o'clock, and move thence to the place of embarkation. The Volunteers will turn out in force to-morrow, and the various companies will march to the general parade in front of the Custom House at 11 o'clock. The No. 1 company will open the new rifle range at Wakari at 6 o'clock in the morning, and compete for a prize left by Lietenant Leggatt. The Port Chalmers Naval Brigade will have a field day. Mr. Feager of the Crown Hotel, Caversham, will provide a variety of amusements during the day, for those who desire to enjoy a visit to the Ocean Beach and the beautiful scenery in its vicinity. In the evening, the two Theatres will be opened, the Princess' for a special holiday perfoi-mance, and the Theatre Royal, will be opened for the season, by Miss Edith Palmerston's monological entertainment. There will also be a Carnival Ball at the Corinthian Hall at midnight.
