The objects of the promoters of the Company are to meet the requirement of the increasing trade between the various Ports north and south of Dunedin, and to form a regular line of communication between Dunedin, Molyneux, Invercargill, and Eiverton on the South, and Oamaru, Timaru and Lyttelton on the North. It is proposed to have'two Screw Steamers built, with carrying capacities, one of 150 and one of 250 tons, and comfortable accommodation fo. passengers, the smaller one for the Southern Trade, and the. larger?; one for the Northern Trade ; the former to be built in Sydney, and the latter on the Clyde. The smaller one could be built and running in about four or five months, larger in about eight or ten months. It is also proposed to take over the river steamer Tuapeka at a valuation, to run on the Molyneux in connection with the_ Southern steamer. More than three-fourths of the capital has been already subscribed and taken up, principally by merchants and others directly interested in the trade of the various Ports.
