Gold in the Waitakeeei Ranges.—We heard yesterday, on good authority, that gold had been discovered in the Waitakerei Ranges, and on making inquiries we ascertained that five different prospects had been obtained in localities at a considerable distance from each other. The person to whom the information of the discovery was first conveyed had such faith in it that he determined to proceed to "Waitakerei on a prospecting expedition as soon as his business will allow him to leave Auckland. Nearly all, if not all of the land in the Waitakerei district has been sold long ago, in lots of 40 and 80 acres, so that if the " find" turns out to be anything like satisfactory, property in that direction will be considerably enhanced in value. — Southern Cross, Oct. 20. Gold has been discovered at Opotiki in the quartz with which the river abounds, but which must have been drifted down from the ranges above. — lbid.
Thb Pleasures of Soldiering.—Rather an amusing scene took place on the Queen's Wharf on Tuesday evening, a short time before the sailing of the Wanganui. A crowd had assembled to -witness the departure of Major Von Tempsky and the nucleus of his little band, when one of the assemblage appeared evidently struck With military ardour, and volunteered to
join and swell the ranks. On his desires being made known to the Major, the aspirant to military glories was examined, and found to be a stalwart young .man, consequently he was en-. listed on the sj>ot. The young recruit, who had. in his pocket the key of his master's premises, at once threw it on to the wharf, saying, "Here, take it to Mr —-——," and jumped on board the Wanganui, which shortly afterwards steamed out of harbor. —• Wellington Independent
