BUSHMAN ACQUITTED

p.A. HAMILTON, October 27. The trial of Henry Reginald Edj wards, aged 60, bushman, of Pokohu, near Rotorua, on a charge of attempting to murder Daniel Christopher McDonald pn June 28, concluded before Mr. Justice Fair in Hamilton last night. After a retirement of nearly five hours the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on all counts. Giving evidence, accused said he had lived in the bush all his life. His family was happy till McDonald, a total stranger, arrived. Accused said he made several unsuccessful efforts to persuade his daughter to give up her association with McDonald. Accused said he saw McDonald with a knife in the throwing position when he fired the shot, which wounded McDonald. He alleged that McDonald threatened Mrs. Edwards with a sledgehammer on June 19 and he then fired one shot at the ground to scare The Crown Prosecutor, Mr. Gillies, submitted that the references to McDonald's alleged violence were pure inventions-
