WHITEBAITER LOST

P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 28. George Theodore Capstick, aged about 44, married, with three children, a teller at the Bank of New Zealand in Ashburton, was swept out to sea at the mouth of the Ashburton River this morning. Mr. Capstick was netting whitebait on the Ashton side. of the river in company with his wife, son, and daughter. When a wave broke into the net he hung on to the net, which was swept into the river, and Mr. Capstick, who was wearing heavy gumboots, was carried out to sea in a current estimated -at 12 knots. Mrs. Capstick tried to save her husband, and she was saved by her son, who pulled her out of the water when she was in difficulty. The coastline for some distance on both sides of the river mouth was patrolled up to darkness, but the body was not recovered. The net was washed up on the beach on the opposite side of the river.
