COLLEGE DEBATE
The annual debate for the Gow Scroll between -Rongotai College, the holders, and Hutt Valley High School, took place in the Rongotai College Hall, and was won by the former. Rongotai affirmed the proposition, "That the removal of British control "from India would be detrimental to the well-being of the peoples of India.".
Mr. G. I. Joseph, the judge, pointed out the necessity, for the leader of the affirmative to give a clear-cut definition of the subject from his team's viewpoint. He complimented Miss McDougall and Mr. Harland, of the Hfctt team, on their hard-hitting debating speeches. Mr. Joseph compared the debate more than favourably with adult debates he had judged. It was the leaders (especially R. L. Jermyn's speech {n reply) that turned the scale in favour of Rongotai, who won by three points. The teams were:—Rongotai, R. L. Jermyn (leader), A. C. Robieson, H. L. Lewis; Hutt, Joan McDougall (leader), Orr, and Harland.
