INDUSTRY IN INDIA

FORESTALLING TROUBLE

Rec. 10 a.m,

BOMBAY, October 26,

The Government of India has convened a conference of representatives of the Central and Provincial Governments, employers, and trade unions, with a vie-v to solving labour problems which are expected to arise with the closing of war factories, and which is already reflected in strikes in a number of industries.

The main items on the agenda will be . the introduction of the 48-hour week and changes in the Factory Act to mitigate the hardships of industrial demobilisation. Industrialists and Government officials think that unless the present unrest is remedied it may lead to a general strike throughout the country.
