STANDARD MARKS

Sir, —Recently you published an article under the above heading which stated that a specification had been agreed upon after .consultation between various interests. As a tradesman I doubt the ability of any member of the committee to pass judgment on the construction of furniture. The representatives of the Rehabilitation Department, the State Advances Corporation, and the Standards Institute are not tradesmen. The union secretary and members of the committee may have been tradesmen once but have been professional union secretaries for so long they are out of touch with modern methods of construction and materials. The same applies to the manufacturers' representatives, who know little of - the actual construction, as that is left to their factory managers and foremen, who during the last few years especially have had one long headache improvising with what labour and materials have been available. Some of this improvising has shown results and brought to light ideas that would never have been thought of under normal conditions, but which in some cases have been definite improvements on older methods. We are forced to go back to antiquated ideas . and materials that were quite modern 50 years ago. A standard specification would be welcomed by everybody concerned providing it was drawn up by a competent committee with modern ideas and administered without political bias.—l am etc.,

WELL GLUED,
