ARMED HOLD-UP
SYDNEY BANK SENSATION
SYDNEY, October 26. An armed bandit today held up the crowded city branch office of the Bank of New South Wales. In a few seconds four shots were fired, one by the bandit and three by employees of the bank. It is believed the bandit was hit in the arm. An unarmed detective tackled the man in a city street, and after a terrific struggle the man was stunned with his own revolver and handcuffed. -,-,-, Hearing shots in the bank hundreds of people gathered outside, and several were knocked down when the bandit dashed out of the door holding one The police were told that the man entered the manager's office, drew his gun, and threatened to shoot him. He then upset a desk on top of- the manager, who was imprisoned beneath
Holding his gun in front of him, the bandit then ran out of the office into the bank, in which there were about 20 people, and said: "This is a stick up." He waved his gun, covering three tellers, but was crossed by gunfire from the employees. One shot at him from his left-hand side, another from in front, and a third through a counter partition. The bandit staggered back, grabbed a chair, and then raced from the bank. Sydney is at present experiencing a crime wave. Thugs viciously bashed three victims and robbed two of them in Sydney last night Including holdups bashings, and assaults on women, these assaults make 18 cases of violent crime in the last four weeks.
