FOR AVONDALE CUP
SWIFT QUARRY RECOVERED
(Special to "The Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day
A feature of the Auckland Cup entry? of 58 is the number or visiting horses engaged. They total 21, and include a dozen from South Island stables. The Waikato owner Mr. W. S. Goosman seems to hold a very good hand with three entries. Representative, Coronaire. and Bueno.
Valley Boy followed up a good effort at the Ohmemuri Meeting last month, when he was defeated by a nose by Tiger Tan over seven furlongs, with a win over Hippodrome in the mile and, a quarter handicap at the Waikato, Hunt Meeting on Labour Day. ' He is' going to be useful, and it is interesting to observe that he has been accorded an entry in the Auckland Cup. He is also in at the Avbndale Meeting. - : Our Gold is regarded by his connections as a genuine stayer, but it is probable that he will find track conditions at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, when the Auckland Cup is run. somewhat different to those in the spring, when the turf was very wet and-heavy. In the Mitchelson .Cup last month he came in for keen support, but any chance he held was lost at the barrier. He is engaged at the Avondale fixture. In the Mitchelson Cup Swift Quarry met his Waterloo quite early in the contest. He dwelt at barrier-rise and this was directly responsible for the tate that befell him at the end of a furlong." Here he had only Our Gold behind him, and it was in endeavouring to go up between other horses that he got on 'the. heels of one and fell. This promising handicap horse is ■ none the worse for that mishap, and is due to contest the handicap event at the Avondale fixture next 'month. , . , With no fewer than 36 left in the Avondale Stakes, run today fortnight, it is obvious that unless therfe are several scratchings the classic will have to be divided, as was done in the Welcome Stakes recently. Beau le Havre and Regal Praise, the division winners in the Welcome Stakes,,are again to run, and as both won very easily their opponents will need to make considerable improvement to have a chance of turning the tables. This need not apply to Rating, who was badly left in the. Auckland classic. Yusuf is a likely improver, and the presence of the big dividend payer at Te Aroha, Grand Tourist, will be interesting. CHANGE OF TRAINERS. A change of scene was recently arranged for Nawab and other horses belonging to the Te Awamutu sportsman Mr. J. McGqvern, who decided to have his team trained nearer home, and they are now in J. L. Muir's stable at Te Rapa. Nawab has done well .since finishing second in the open mile at the recent Auckland Meeting, and he will be back again to fulfil his Avondale engagements, being engaged in the six furlongs and the mile. The latter race may suit him the better. N "The stablemates Orakau and Fortune's Smile are enaged in the King George Handicap at the' Avondale Meeting, arid they should be able to give a good account of themselves. The latter finished second at Trentham on Labour Day and that form is usually very good, so he will be one of the early fancies for the Avondale event. Orakau failed to show up in the Mitchelson Cup, and with the track firming he may not find it easy, for he has usually gone best on ground with the sting but of it. He has improved since he last appeared and has previously shown that he can stay a mile and a half. It may have been a bit sudden to expect Representative to win the Mitchelson Cup after haying had only two races, both, over six furlongs, but his success at his second outing suggested that he had overcome the disability he suffered returning from the New Zealand Cup Meeting two years ago. However, a different aspect was shown when he failed to race like a possibility in the Mitchelson Cup. He is engaged in the big event at the Avondale Meeting, and also the New Zealand Cup and Auckland Cud. ;
