FORMAL DRESS AGAIN The opening of the Spring Exhibition of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts last evening by his Excellency the Governor-General was reminiscent of pre-war private views, with all the 400 guests present wearing formal evening dress once .more. Velvets, taffeta, and cloque crepes were worn in a variety , of : colours that was refreshing to see after the years of austerity £ rocking. Headdresses, too, were given an added interest with brilliant clasps and combs, flowers tucked into* upswept rolls, one young woman wearing a black tulle head-veil spangled with sequins. Her Excellency Lady Newall was wearing a gown of white slipper satin, with diamante embroideries at the deep, square neckline, beneath a fulllength coat of wine-red velvet. Her tiara and earrings were of diamonds and she: also wore pearls. Miss Nora Walton, who accompanied her, was wearing a white, shortsleeved gown with gold embroideries at the waistline. '
A cyclamen and blue-shot taffeta gown .was worn by Mrs. G. G. Gibbes Watson, wife of the president. Among those present were: Sir Patrick and Lady Duff.
