WOMEN'S STOCKINGS

QUESTION IN HOUSE

A question of topical interest to women, dealing with stocking supplies, was addressed by Miss M. B. Howard (Government, Christchurch East) to the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr. Sullivan) in the House of Representatives, yesterday. In asking whether the Minister would extend the currency of the XlO4 stocking coupon, Miss Howard said that very few fully-fashioned stockings had been available during the past few months, and those that had been obtainable had been sold at such a time that working women were unable to purchase any. Many hundreds of workers still had their last coupon. Miss Howard also asked the Minister whether he would take up with the manufacturers the making of lisle stockings that were wearable. "Lisle stockings," said Miss Howard, "are mostly worn by the older women, especially old age pensioners. Lately there have been on the .market in Auckland lisle stockings made with a heavy seam right across the top of the toes which makes them completely unwearable, thus wasting the.material, which is, I understand, in short supply-" ______________________
