THURSDAY NEXT

WAR EFFORT DEBATE

NEW ZEALAND'S PART

New Zealand's future war effort and the use of her forces would be discussed by the House of Representatives on Thursday next, said the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) when the House met this morning-.

Mr. Fraser said he had expressed the hope that it would be possible to discuss the question of New Zealand's part in the war against Japan and the use of the Dominion's military forces to the end of winning victory against the remaining eii-my and thereby once more recording what they ■ had affirmed and reaffirmed right from the outbreak of war—the use ■of the Dominion's resources in endeavouring to defeat the common enemy. • He -had discussed the matter with the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holland), -who concurred as to the advisability of a discussion. Mr. Fraser b .said he .had. thought it would be possible to arrange the discussion for, today,, but. Mr. Holland quite reasonably had pointed out that there were important matters to be considered and information to be studied, and that it would be more advisable for the discussion to take place next week. He concurred in that view and the discussion would be held next Thursday. Mr. Fraser added he thought that .would meet the desire of the public to know what was to be done in the future regarding New Zealand's war effort and the utilisation of the country's forces.

The Leader of the Opposition confirmed Mr. Fraser's statement. He said there had been discussions and the matter would be considered by a committee of the Opposition over the weekend, because the Opposition thought it proper when asked to study such matters to do so very closely. The Opposition had had a meeting and had decided that time was required to study the situation properly and that today would be too early to have a discussion.
