CRISIS ON BOUGAINVILLE
MANILA, July 26. Describing how. the Australians are waging savage warfare on the Bougainville front, a Press -Association correspondent says that the Japanese traoped there are surprisingly well fed and full of fight. It is estimated that 17,000 Japanese I remain, under the wily Lieut-General Kanda, who is commanding the remj nants of the 17th Japanese Army. They 1 have more than 150 4-inch artillery and other guns, and an abundance of 75mm. dual-purpose guns, which can be used devastatingly against tanks. The Australians have reached the garden area, where Lieut.-General Kanda must make a last stand. He cannot go further south, beyond the. plantation areas, because of the absence of natural food.
The Wellington Hospital Boar agreed last night that its superintend--ent-in-chief, Dr. J. Cairney, should visit Australia shortly to inspect hospitals . - in the main centres, with the particular aim of obtaining the latest informa- ' tion with regard to the planning c* * outpatients' blocks and other"- "* -/ developments. --- L>^ .--■■'- *
