UNRRA ASSISTANCE
APPLICATION BY RUSSIA
WASHINGTON, July 26. The Deputy Administrator of UNRRA, Mr. Hendrickson, has announced that Russia has requested 700,000,000 dollars' worth of relief and rehabilitation assistance from UNRRA. He said that Russia's request, if. accepted, together with the Chinese programme, would more than consume UNRRA's total authorised expenditure for 1946. The request, in accordance with the regular procedure, would be investigated, he said. The applicant's ability or inability to pay would be investigated, but he had no reason to expect that there would be any obstacle to acceptance of the request, because Russia was one of the countries which had suffered most from war damage. The greatest obstacle to completion of the 1945 programme was not ,the question of raising additional funds, but difficulty in translating the funds into the required types of goods. China seeks 945,000.000 dollars, and Poland 600,000,000 dollars.
