HIT IN KURE RAID

MAJOR UNITS SUFFER

LONDON, July 24

Admiral Nimitz, giving a preliminary report of the results of the attack by American and British carrier planes on the Japanese naval base of Kure, says that six Japanese warships were damaged: Two'battleships, an aircraftcarrier, and three cruisers.

• The two battleships were 29,000----tonners of the Is class. The 8500-ton heavy -cruiser, Tone, and a light cruiser were left badly burning.

.American planes, destroyed 19 enemy aircraft while British planes destroyed 12 others and damaged . another 13. British aircraft also damaged a Japanese escort-carrier off Shikoku, as well as other smaller vessels.
