CRATER LAKE VANISHES

Except for a shallow pool of water about the size of a small room, the lake that has been in the crater of Mount Ruapehu for as. long as any man can remember has completely, disappeared, states a New Plymouth correspondent. This was stated on Monday by Mr. J. A. Blyth, of Hawera, who spent the weekend on the mountain. The rapidity of the lake's disappearance. Mr. Blyth said, was illustrated by the fact that photographs taken by geologists only three weeks ago showed that, of the lake's 17 acres, only three 'remained. Now there remained only about ten square yards at most, and it appeared that the water was only about a foot deep. It was probable that the lake's waters had evaporated. It was certain that, the lake would never reappear, he added. Lava was already massed in it to a height of about 40ft. If it rose another 40ft it would go over the scoria ridge at the top of the mountain at its lower point on the south-east. At that point the ridge was very fhin, and was not supported by the thick retaining walls of ice that were in evidence on the other side.! ' : . ' '
