U.S. Carrier Planes
KURE NAVAL BASE BOMBED
LONDON, July 23.
Carrier-planes of the United States 3rd Fleet have struck in great strength at Japan. This time their target was the big1 naval base of Kure, near the southern end of Honshu and facing1 Japan's Inland Sea.
The assault began at dawn today, Japanese time, and Admiral Nimitz 's communique says that the attacks are continuing. One report from Guam says that more than 1000 carrier-planes are in action.
: Kure was badly smashed up hy Super-Portress attacks on July -1 and towards the end of June. It has an arsenal, docks, and shipbuilding yards, and has been Japan's main source of naval weapons, \ torpedoes and armour plate.
Other American warships have "been in action against the Kuriles. On Sunday they shelled coastal targets on Paramishuro. The results could-not be seen owing to dense fog.
