BALIK PAPAN BAY

AUSTRALIAN CONTROL

NEW YORK, July 22.

Troops of the Australian 7th Division in their new landings without opposition in Balik Papan Bay on Friday night established a beach-head of six miles between the villages of Tempadoeng and Bernagoe, reports the "New York Times" correspondent. These landings give the Australians control of virtually all the navigable waters of the bay. The Australians now occupy a strip of approximately 15 miles along the eastern shore of the bay as well as about 12 miles on the western shore.

American rocket-ships on Friday sailed up the Riko River and blasted, a supposed Japanese barge hide-out near the headwaters of the river with rockets and 3in shells.

The attacks on Celebes reached a peak when Liberators wiped out the town of.Tobili, on Shildpad Island, in the eastern section of Celebes, which pi-obably has the largest concentration of Japanese troops east of Borneo.

Liberators also blasted airfields from, which planes might have interfered with the Australian landings.
