*■•■■■. LONDON, July 23, The American air attack on the Übe synthetic oil plant on Sunday produced excellent results. The Japanese fighters and ground , defences were ineffective, and 100 bombers flew safely back to th« Marianas. Light units of the American 3rd Fleet which is operating off the Bonin Islands/have bombarded a town on Chichi Jimv one of the Bonin group. ; ! More details have been received of the American dive-bombing attack last Wednesday on shipping in the Tokio Bay area in which; a Japanese battleship of the Ngato class was badly damaged.

■ A correspondent says that hundreds of dive-bombers screamed down more than 13,000' feet through terrific anti-aircraft fire to drop their 10001b bombs on the 32,000-ton battleship in the harbour. The exact extent of the damage done to the ship is not known, but it* is thought that the Japanese will not be able to. use her for some time*
