A MORE SERIOUS TURN
ITALIAN GAOL RIOT
Rec. 12.50 p.m. ROME, July 23. A new and more serious riot broke out in the Regina Coeli gaol when the guards discovered that _ great groups of prisoners were digging an escape tunnel under a wall while others were engaged in throwing tiles from the roof against the police, to distract attention from the tunnellers.
The prisoners set fire to the roof of the gaol, and the flames, which raged all night, caused the collapse of the central tower. ■
Larger numbers of prisoners and relatives who gathered outside the prison showed dangerous hostility to the police. A so-called partisan group is reported to have instigated the mutiny among the prisoners. They were dissatisfied with the slowness .of the judicial procedure.
