AMERICANS MAKE ARRESTS (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) Rec. 12.15 p.m. . LONDON, July 23.
Half a million United States troops searched every house in the American zone of occupation in Germany for weapons and loot during the weekend, says a correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain in Frankfurt. More than 80,000 persons were taken into custody in what was perhaps the greatest mass raid. in history. Most of them were released after being questioned.
Many of those arrested were SS men who were wanted as war criminals. The fifteen million Germans in the area offered no resistance, but of two who tried to escape one was shot dead.
A considerable number of guns, ammunition, and loot such as American uniforms, rations, petrol, and vehicles were uncovered. There was no sign of organised German underground movements. Some of those arrested were wearing American uniforms. They said that they had no other clothes.
