BREAK-OUT AT LAE
AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS
Rec. 1 p.m.
MELBOURNE, July 24,
Soldiers undergoing sentences in a detention barracks at Lac, New Guinea, made two escapes recently. The men, in the second break-out, stoned a party of soldiers who attempted to induce them to return to the barracks. The escapes were revealed by the Army Public Relations Department, which said the situation was now completely under control. The had to be enlarged recently to hold the servicemen under sentence, including some members of the Royal Navy. The escapes occurred before the bar^ racks had been enlarged, and when there were temporary arrangements. The guards were equipped with rifles, but had no ammunition. The men under sentence banded together and walked out virtually unopposed. They broke into the quartermaster's store and stole revolvers and ammunition. Most of the revolvers have been recovered, but it is thought that 12 may have been concealed by the escapees.
