PIANO RECITAL

A private piano ±-ecital was given by the pupils of Miss Dorothy Downing in the Victoria League Rooms recently, the proceeds being donated to the Wellington branch of the Crippled Children Society. After the performance the pupils

received flowers and presents from their parents and friends. The nineteen candidates who were successful in Associated Board examinations were congratulated and presented with their certificates. Prizes given .by Miss Downing for the best results were awarded to Quetha Rees, Iris Hannett, Joy Duff (grades 7, 6, and 8), Rosemary Goddard, and Margaret Benge (both grade ,1, distinction). Quetha Rees also gained the theory prize. To conclude the evening Miss Downing played MacDowell's "Etude de Concert" and the Finale from the "Etudes Symphoniques" (Schumann).

HERE AND THERE

Eastbourne Dance.

A dance held recently by the Eastbourne Omnibus Drivers' Club proved highly successful in providing funds for its activities. Approximately 250 people enjoyed a very pleasant evening.

Address By Mrs. Allum,

Mrs. Charles McPhee presided at the July meeting of the Kelburn branch of the League of Mothers. The guest speaker, Mrs. Allum, gave an address on "England During the Blitz," describing "the fortitude shown by the British people during that tragic time.

League of Mothers' Meeting.

At the July meeting of the central branch of the League of Mothers, Mrs. Durston presided in Mrs. Dallard's absence. The speaker was Mrs. J. Cocker, who gave a very interesting account of her life in New Zealand lighthouses. Songs were given by Mrs. Upton.

Fifteenth Anniversary Party.

The Wellington After-care Association gave a delightful party recently to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the Children's Occupation Centre. There was a record attendance of mothers and children. The guests were received by Mrs. D. Coutts, J.P., who was presented with a beautiful shoulder spray. Games and afternoon tea and the cutting of a lovely birthday cake, made and donated by Mrs. Brooke-Taylor, completed a very happy afternoon.

Paraparaumu Women's Institute.

An appeal for warm clothing for UNRRA and for summer clothes for the Polish children in New Zealand was made at the July meeting of the Paraparaumu Women's Institute. The guest speaker was Mrs. Carey, who gave a talk on the work of the Taranaki institutes. Mrs. Clarkson illustrated her address on Stoke-on-Trent with pieces of fine china made in the potteries there. An interesting article about the activities of the various institutes in England and Wales was read by Miss R. Clarkson. The proceeds from the. well-stocked white elephant stall were enough to pay the final sum owing on the library building. Prizes were won by Miss Sadie Sheargold and Mrs. Kelso, and the flower competition by Miss Wingate with Mrs. Graham second.
