DESTROYED BY STORM
VALUABLE PLANTATIONS
P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, July 23. Disastrous darniige was done to the Selwyn Plantation Board's property by the gale that swept Canterbury on July 13, according to the superintendent, Mr. E. A. Cooney, today. Over 300 acres of 20- to 25-year-old pinus insignis were blown down at Burnham and Hororata, and about 10 acres of gums, planted in 1888, were blown down near Burnham. The future of another plantation of 238 acres of insignis and gums was doubtful because a big percentage of old gums had blown down and damaged the pines. The effects of the disaster would not be properly felt for 15 or 20 years, when the areas would normally be due for cutting, said Mr. Cooney. It was difficult, to assess the loss in money to the board and the loss to the community in the shelter which the plantations would have 'provided for another 20 years. A tentative estimate of the timber which could be saved was 2,500,000 super feet of pinus insignis and 8000 cords of firewood.
