DUNEDIN NORTH SEAT

MAJORITY REDUCED

By a majority of 738 the Dunedin North seat in.the House of Representatives was retained for the Government on Saturday by Mr. R. Walls in a straight-out fight against the National Party candidate, Mr. N. H. Jones, who polled 5578« against Mr. Walls's 6316. The by-election resulted from the death of Mr. J. W. Munro, who held the seat for Labour for 20 years. At the General Election in 1943 Mr. Munro, in a four-cornered contest,.. polled 8038 votes, obtaining a majority of 2798. In 1938, against a National Party candidate, he was returned with a majority of 3557.

Polling at the 21 booths gave Walls 6264 votes and Jones 5524. Service voting resulted: New Zealand, Walls 26, Jones 28; Pacific (incomplete), Walls nil, Jones 2; United Kingdom, WaUs 26, Jones 24; totals, Walls 52, Jones 54. Outstanding Services votes include those from the Middle East. There are also 744 absentee, postal, and declaration votes to come.
