END OF MAN-HUNT
POLICE EFFECT ARRESTS

Just before dark on Saturday a party of Napier police conducting a manhunt m_the Tarawera district, on the Napier-Taupo road, located two men d frnres£ eithem; T^ hunt had l^ted from Friday, morning. Very-heavy rain was encountered during the l*^s\^ hlch f nded with th * men being discovered huddled on cement bags under thick ti-tree. Both were v£l hi-°.- gh ' + exh. a«sted and famished. They did not resist. Police action in isolating the area by guarding two bridges blocked the only outlets, as the rivers were too strong to be forded without aid. In an effort to divert the pursuers, a fox terrier had been tied to some bushes and the men had discarded their packs and heavy outer clothing. One had worn his socks through, and to save his feet had torn the sleeves from his shirt to replace the socks. After their capture the men.were taken to the Tarai^ eri -5?. tel' where they were warmed by bathing in a mineral bath and given tood and dry clothing. On the application of DetectiveSergeant D. McKenzie, they were remanded to appear again next Monday Other charges were pending, the offid ued' and a further remand might be necessary'
