DEFAULTER WHO ESCAPED
O.C. ■ PALMERSTON" N., This Day .A labourer, Walter Frederick Jones, 40, was sentenced by Mr H P +£^F' S-M;i a* Palmerston North "yes-" terday to three months' gaol for escaping^ from the Whitanui (Shannon), -defaulters' detention camp. He was committed to the camp on Sep--9Qm^olo9' ^942' and escaped on June 16, 1943. He was .arrested on August 31, 1944, at Wellington, where he was working as a labourer under an assumed name. He had been absent from camp for 435 days;
