THRESHOLD OF PLAINS

DESPERATE ENEMY DEFENCE LONDON, September 4. Eighth Army troops have smashed the Adriatic end of the Gothic Line on a 20-mile front and Canadian spearheads were last reported less than ten miles from the important town of Rimini. A front line dispatch says the Germans are staking everything on a desperate attempt to defend Rimini and prevent the British and Canadian forces pouring on to the plain of Lombardy. On one ofc the last rivers before the plain, the Germans today fought with fanatical desperation. Our air forces kept up their operations in support of the troops. On the west coast, Fifth Army troops have swept several miles north of the Arno on a broad front. A big force of Allied heavy and medium bombers today bombed bridges and railways on German communication lines in northern Italy, including several bridges on the Brenner Pass line. Others bombed submarines in Genoa harbour.
