KING OF RUMANIA
COURAGEOUS RULER
LONDON, September 4. King Michael has been in touch with the Rumanian Communists since last year, says the Moscow correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain. He began consultations with the Communists to prepare for Rumania's rupture with the Axis. The Rumanian Minister of State and Justice, M. Patrascanuj who has been a member of the Communist Party for 25 years, told the correspondent: "King Michael has exhibited great courage and political maturity. He often took the initiative in plotting with the Communists. In May of this year the Rumanian Communists proposed—and King Michael agreed to—an immediate uprising and direct action against the Antonescu Government. On August 22 the bloc met, with the King presiding ,and August 26 was set for the coup, because Antonescu had arranged for an interview in the palace that day. "But Antonescu showed up three days earlier, and Michael calmly ordered him to conclude an armistice with the Allies or resign. Antonescu refused, and Michael immediately arrested him. Later he arrested other Ministers and Bucharest's Chief of Police. That evening the new Government took power and Michael broadcast his proclamation."
