WELLINGTON TROTS

CHANCES OF JACKIE GUY

(By "Ariki Toa.")

Jackie Guy, who is expected to provide -most- opposition to Slavonic in the Wellington Stakes at Trentham on Saturday, is a most promising three-year-old,, and should develop into a good winner. At his last start, in the Canterbury Stakes at Addington, he was responsible for a pleasing performance, even though beaten out of a place. He did not begin as smartly as some of his opponents, and even when he did get within striking distance of the leaders in the straight he was forced over a lot of extra ground, and actually did well to be practically in line with the place-getters. He is sure to benefit from the experience, and may be a gilt-edged place proposition this weekend. Speedy But Unreliable—Bohemian at one stage promised to develop into one of the season's best youngsters, but of late has ruined his prospects' by breaking at the start and so adding \ his handicap. There is no doubt of his speed and ability, but until he improves in barrier manners he will need tc be taken on trust. Showing Improvement.—For some time past Gold Pot has failed to live up to expectations, but he showed improvement recently by being in the thick of the fray to the straight in both of his outings at Addington. This horse possesses the ability to win his way back to a much tighter mark, and it is to be hoped that he is now much more solid than formerly. Likely Maiden.—ln her few starts to date Grelba has shown ability, and is likely to add interest to the novice events at Trentham this weekend. She started on four occasions last season Her best effort was fourth in a nontotalisator maiden event at New Brighton; she ran the mile and • a quarter in- 2.49 2-5. Grelba is a six-year-old mare by Grattan Loyal from the Nelson Bingen mare Nelbar. j Placed Last Start.—Catalpa showed a glimpse of his best form in finishing second to Cabin Boy in the priri- ! cipal handicap at Addington recently and should not be long in rejoining the winning list. He compassed the two miles in 4.23 1-5, which was particularly fast for one in his class. Catalpa is ! v nJ? make his next appearance in the Wilford Memorial Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, and is likely to be one of the favourites. Plenty of Ability.—There was a quiet tip for Nola Scott on the second' aay at Addington, but unfortunately the U Scott mare ran into trouble on tne journey and had to be pulled up no line could be gained on her relative prospects at the Wellington MeetV^J • weeken<3. She is to concede uyd? J m the Railway Handicap, but should the pace be slow in the early stages she should soon. make up the leeway, and thus have every chance of success. ' - Smart Beginner. — .Hillcrest- was solidly supported in both of his two outings at the Auckland Meeting last month, but after showing brilliant speed in the early stages on each occasion he weakened in the straight and had to be content with two minor placlll%. However, he revealed plenty of a°lh\y • and if produced at Trentham * should be in the thick of the fray for the greater portion of the journey Brilliant Pacer.—Trusty Scott was responsible for an outstanding performance in winning the Speedway Handicap at Addington, and even I though he was perhaps a shade lucky m that Watcher stumbled and lost all chance when looking all over a winner the effort was worthy of success He had to display both brilliarice'and s a, mma to Sain the verdict, and many will be astray if he does not eventuSas Wm MS Way t0 the tiShtest
