Sherwood Forest won a couple of novice events at Greymouth in January last year. On conformation he looks a likely type for hurdling. Voltaire is looking particularly well, but will need racing before the New Zealand Cup comes along. The youngest member of the family is a three-year-old with plenty of size to assist her in her future career. Gone Home.—Although The Tosser was nominated for the Wanganui Meeting, the Wheriko gelding is no* longer with W. H. Hume at Trentham, that trainer having returned him to his owner. Incidentally, the trainer is how giving attention to the yearling by Robin Goodfellow from Horomea. This juvenile is a chestnut colt with four white stockings, and his owner is of the opinion that he might be the best of the family, which is saying a lot. Will Not Run.—The unnamed colt by Ringmaster—-Submission in H. Dulieu's stable will not contest the Wanganui Debutant Stakes,' it having been decided to give, the brother to Subdued more time. Additions.—A. Sager has taken in hand a four-year-old mare by Cape Horn, and expects to receive after the Ashburton Meeting the Valkyrian gelding Norse, who has been purchased by Mr. C. Ferguson, of the Hutt. Last season Norse won a highweight at the North Canterbury Meeting, but there his successes ended. He showed pace for a time in a hurdle race at Riccarton recently, and this might be his future .role;. -That other member of the Old.-Glory, is also to be tried as a hurdler. He shaped quite well in a school on Thursday New Trainer.—F.Gough, who recently took out a trainer's licence, has in Hand at Trentham a brace of two-year-olds, the one a gelding by Gynerium trom. the Roydon mare Princess Ball, fu d e 1 ° i th^ racolt by Man's Pal from [ the Night Raid mare Flashup. Both were purchased at the National Sales, , the first who claims relationship with Gay Ballerina, La Moderne, etc., at 360 guineas, and the second, who is a ■granddaughter of Linkup, half-sister ;to Password, at 350 guineas. The colt descends from Beaulivre _ Overdue.—That northern sprinter, Kara Avis, has, gone a long way without winning, his last success being as a hack m May, 1942. He has been SP!* Well + ln his Gaining, ■ however, and may, yet reproduce his early brilliance. ■:■*■ J Young Material.—W. J. Lady Scholar (who led her division home in the parade at Trentham in July) is by Rhodes Scholar; irom- the Hunting Song mare Golden Song, and was bought cheaply by Mr. v L. Benge, of Mungaroa. Diatqne is by Diatomous from the Palaf=n~ Taxnarado mare l Palardo, cost 150gs, and is owned also by Mr. Higgs. Carmehta is a filly by Foxbridge from the Rampion mare Lady Rampion who was bred, in Australia.k Carme--hta^was a late foal, but is making good progress. Showed Promise.—Flying Hawk, who lm^d up with h. A. Telford's team at Trentham m the closing stages of w^f m ' st0 T be trie^ in hurdling role. In a school over the battens last week he made quite a creditable showing. t . Tracks Heavy.—The course proper at Trentham shows little sign now of the cuttmg-up it received at the Wellington Winter Meeting, but the plentiful rainfall has kept the inner tracks very heavy. No. 2 trial grass is being reserved for the spring, and is nj4 yet< available to fast workers. Oflrthe I off-mornings some trainers are conI tent_ to work round the roads instead of doing pace v/nrk ,out on the oval I M the course itself.
