ON CHINDWIN RIVER
RUGBY, September 2. Allied troops now hold the western bank of the Chindwin River along half its length, namely, 300 miles from its source, according to a message from Allied headquarters in Ceylon. Saturday's South-east Asia communique states that the Japanese have been driven from positions 30 miles north of Tiddim and our advance continues. - American Liberators, according to General Stilwell's communique, attacked a large concentration of shipping in Takao harbour, south-western Formosa, on Thursday night. Several ships were destroyed or damaged. Liberators bombed Kaitak aerodrome, Hong Kong, and Tienho and Whitecloud aerodromes, Canton.-—8.0.W. NEWS FOR PRISONERS |Rec. 11 a.m. COLOMBO, Sept. 3. Liberators which bombed the Bang-kok-Moulmein railway carried thousands of leaflets not intended as usual for the enemy, but printed in English and carrying the latest European war news. ■ ■ -It was hoped that some might find their way to the British prisoners in south Thailand camps. The leaflets announced the liberation of Paris and bade the prisoners take heart.
