ESCAPING VESSELS
HAMMERED FROM THE AIR
LONDON, September 2. Coastal Command planes relentlessly hammered enemy vessels which left French harbours in an almost continuous stream last night heading for Belgian ports, states the Air Ministry news service. The ships ranged from E-boats and R-boats to trawlers and merchant , ships. Bright moonlight helped the airmen to sight the targets, and rough seas reduced the ships' speed. The attackers saw few results because they weaved about to avoid the enemy fire, but when the last patrol went out they could find only three E-boats of a large force previously sighted. Four of the.planes are missing. Allied light naval forces last night took some toll of enemy vessels which left Calais and Boulogne, it is reported.
