STABILISATION MEMBERS
Apart from the chairman, who was a civil servant, the services of the members of ■ the Economic Stabilisation Commission were, and always had been, entirely "on a vpluntary basis, said the Minister in Charge of Stabilisation (Mr. Sullivan) in . the House of Representatives yesterday. He was-replying to an urgent question by Mr. A. G. Osborne (Government, Onehunga) , Mr. Sullivan said that the arrangement had existed from the outset at the express desire of the members themselves, who offered to give their services- freely in the interests of the war effort. No remuneration had been Paid, and the only allowances had been to cover the out-of-pocket expenses of the member who lived outside Wellington. The Minister of Internal Affair* (Mr. Parry): Who comprise the Commission? Mr. Sullivan said tha.t the memoirs were the Secretary to the Trersury (Mr. B. C. Ashwin),' Mr. F." P. Walsh, and Mr. W. Marshall.
Front illustrates the diffi,cu"\'/es. For the effipient conduct of operations and the winning of the war "in record time" the command set-up in France seems the best possible. The Riviera armies, under ; General Patch, whose operations must be co-ordinated with those of the armies of "the north, naturally also come under the supreme command of Eisenhower, It would hardly be possible to secure the desired military results i? General Maitland Wilson continued from h,is Mediterranean headquarters, to direct operations in southern France. The campaign in Italy, which may receive a fillip from the Allied operations beyond. Nice, continues under the immediate command of General Alexandei-, with General Wilson in charge of all Mediterranean operations. As these may include landings in the Balkans now, Qeneral Wilspn* will have sufficient respqnsibfcties,'including liaison with Afarshal Tito in^Yugoslavia. -.-.-*-., ~ ~ -
