BIG FIRE AT MASTERTON
P.A. . MASTERTON, This Day. The most serious and spectacular fire recorded in Masterton lor years occurred shortly after 5 o'clock this morning, when the large drapery establishment of Hugo and Shearer, in Queen Street, was completely destroyed. The building goes from Queen Street through to another str:ct, and nothing but the brick walls remain. The fire had a firm hold when the alarm was given, the inside of the building being then a mass of flame. Fortunately, there was no wind, and the brigade was able to keep the fire from spreading. The block is in the centre of the town. The damage is estimated at many thousands of pounds. The building and stock were insured, but the loss is considerably above the cover. An empty building adjoining was seriously gutted and the ■ Red Cross rooms were damaged. Hugo and Shearer-'s stock and the building were insured for £20,000. The empty shop, whiph was recently bought by the Borough Council, was insured for £1200,
