POLISH RISING
SOME CONFUSION
PUGHT OF THE PEOPLE A lelter signed by Archbishop O'Shea and Bishop Holland, published in "The Post" on Wednesday, was brought to the notice of the Prime Minister by Mr. C. G. E. Harker (Na^ tional, Waipawa) in the House of Representatives yesterday. The letter referred to the plight of Polish citizens fighting agamst the Germans in Wai> saw, the writers stating tha.t they were unable to understand why 1700-mile trips had to be made by R.A.F. planes from Italy to drop supplies when the Russian allies were only a few miles away from the city. Mr. Fraser said he had seen the letter and he thought all would have read the reports from Warsaw with heavy hearts. The Polish citizens were still fighting against heavy odds in the heart of Warsaw. There appeared to have been confusion over the initiation of the rising, owing apparently to lack of co-ordmation with the British and Russian authorities. That, in his opinion, made the position even more urgent because the Poles, if they erred, erred oh the side of righteousness and sheer courage The responsibility of all the United Nations was very great indeed and had been fully discharged so far as the New Zealand Government was concerned in consultation and collabo«*£h "h? th v e + B, ritish Government, which, although taken unawares by the rising, had promptly taken' extraordinary risks with planes and oilots to succour those who. were suffering in Warsaw. If there was anythingf"£! New Zealand could do every tffort would be made to do it.
