RELEASE SOUGHT
TEACHER IN AIR FORCE
P.A. AUCKLAND, This Day. An application by the Auckland Grammar School Board for the release from the Royal New Zealand Air Force of a senior mathematics master previously employed at the Takapuna Grammar School was heard by the Armed Forces Appeal Board. The reservist was Pilot Officer William Harvey Thomson, 37, holder of degrees in mathematics, and science. He is serving in the meteorological section of the Air Force. The first assistant and mathematics master at the Takapuna Grammar School, Mr. A. W. Short, said in evidence that he would be retiring this year and Mr. Harvey would be required to fill the vacancy. The work was highly specialised and a number of people in New Zealand who were competent to do the work could be counted on one's fingers. Mr. Harvey had been allowed to leave the school two years ago because it was understood he was wanted for urgent work in the Air Forces overseas. He had been retained in New Zealand and was now only fit for overseas service in a non-flying capacity. The board recommended that the reservist be released.
