Catering for two-year-olds with the P^neer Handicap, four furlongs, the Avondale Jockey Club furnishes the northern up-and-coming stars . with their first opportunity to display their possibilities on the racecourse. Of 25 juveniles entered, eight figured in the parade at the Pakuranga Hunt fixture. The following information as to their breeding may be welcome:— Beau Martian.—Bay colt by Beau Repaire from Battleflag, by Martian from Lady Kinloch (by Menschikoff), thus a naif-brother to Slayer, winner of the C.J.C. Lincoln Steeplechase (twice) and Beaufort Steeples, W.R.C. July Steeples, and Riverton Great Western Steeples. Was bought at the National Sales by the Takanini trainer P. E. Pope for 260 guineas. Interceptor.—Brown gelding by Bronze Eagle from Hunters Call, by Hunting Song . from Telepathy, by Rosenor from Aragon (by Vasco). A first foal, his dam is a half-sister to Transmitter. Hunters Call never raced. Shortbread.—Bay gelding by Dink from Danesia, by • Prince Merriwee— Te Papapa, by Marble Arch—Momi (by Hotchkiss), thus a half-brother to froxy, Valise, Valcere, Valdene, and Bronzena, and full-sister to Doll Dinks who won at-her fourth start as a two-year-old, but who has not won since. Sir Jovial.— Brown colt by Jovial Son from Marlene, by Romnev—Takanau, by . Finland—Miss Lochiel (by Lochiel). Marlene was only lightly raced,' but she is a half-sister to Wharncliffe, winner of the New Zealand Grand National Hurtlies. Takahau was a sister to White Cockade Kiltess, and Chief Lochiel, who were ail good winners. Although a third foal, Sir Jovial -is the first of the family to race Was bought for 50 guineas at the National Sales by Mr. E. Bowden of Auckland. Shadow King-.—Bay gelding by Dia- *£"? lr om Whirlmint, by Whirlwind —Mint Moselle, by Catmint—Demoiselle (by Demosthenes), thus a halfbrother to British % Mint. His dam is a half-sister to Palmint and Minvaal both of whom were winners. Was bought by Mr. G. Cobb, of Matamata, at the sales for 360 guineas. General Lytup.—Chestnut colt by Solicitor General from Lvtup, by Clarenceux—Flame, by Pan theon—Catherine Wheel (by Maxim), thus a halfbrother to Night Pilot, winner of the A.R.C. President's Handicap, Taranaki Centennial Cup, etc. Flame was a halfsister to Prayer Wheel, the grandam of Phar Lap. Was purchased at the sales for 300 guineas by Mrs. W. D. Graham, of Auckland, who raced Night HIGH-PRICED YOUNGSTERS. Balmore. —Brown colt by Coronach from the English-bred Canvasser by Sir Cosmo—Canna, by Captain Cuttle (winner of the English Derby) from Bellona (by Happy Warrior). Canvasser was herself a winner, and traces through Bellona to Crucifix,' winner of the One Thousand Guineas, Two Thousand Guineas, and Oaks, and dam of Surplice (Derby and St. Leger). Was bought by Mr. K. Austin, agent, at the sales for 1400 guineas. Take-a-lot—Brown colt by Defaulter from Spinalot, by Iliad—Spionetta, by Spion Kop—Flash of Steel. Spinalot was placed, in the few starts she had in Australia, and is a half-sister to Ruling Spi, dam of the brilliant but ill-fated Sea Spi. Spionetta was bought as a yearling at the National Stud (England) for 2300 guineas, being a halfsister to Sword Play, the dam of seven winners. Flash of Steel was a halfsister to Harpy, dam of Orpen and the Irish Derby winner Raeburn. Kathshara.—Brown gelding by Bulandshar and the first foal of Kathbella, by Beau Pere—Royal Line, by Lackham—Hymarty (by . Hymettus). The dam was a winner of the W.R.C. Thompson Handicap, A.R.C. Goodwood Handicap, Avondale J.C. Mount Eden Handicap, etc., and Royal Line was a half-sister to the well-performed Curie. The Te Rapa trainer A. Winder went to 1150 guineas to secure Kathshara at the sales. Balgowan.— Chestnut colt by Coronach from* imported Legality, by Noblesse Oblige—Permissible, thus a half-brother to Bambury, Whirling, Marshall Hall, Chestnut Glow, and Balfron, all good performers. The Takanini ' trainer F. Smith, purchased him on.behalf of a patron at the sales for 1200 guineas. The Crofter.—Brown gelding by Tweed II from Outcry, by Hunting Song—Barcarole, by Martian—Grand Opera. Barcarole was the dam of Humoresque, Meynell, Boatsong, etc., and Grand Opera produced Soldiers' Chorus, Tannhauser, Cherubim, Madam Butterfly, Rossini, etc., but seemingly none of the earlier produce of Outcry has as yet raced. Tweedside. —Bay colt by Tweed II from Whirl, by Bisogne—Pirouette, by Boniform—Peirene (by Achilles), thus a half-sister to Medina, who raced only twice as a two-year-old last season. Neither of the two older members of the family has sported silk. Royal Guest.—Brown colt by Safari from Biddy Pay, by Autopay—Biddy Thurnham, by Thurnham—Malaya (by Monoform). Biddy Pay did not race, but heir half-sister, Pocket Venus, was a fair winner. Royal Guest is a second foal. WELL RELATED. Last Sign.—Brown filly by Phaleron Bay from Countersign, by Paper Money —Kilberry, by Kilbroney—Success, by The Officer—Content (by Dreadnought), thus a sister to Phaleron Sign, winner of the Victoria Handicap at Ellerslie last season, and * half-sister to Indian Sign (Wanganui Guineas), Linguist, Coiinterlunch, Counterflight, etc. Countersign was a winner of the Dunedin Guineas, and Kilberry was a sister to Killowen, winner of the A.J.C. Clibborn Stakes and Grantham Stakes, and half-sister to Honesty (Invercargill Cup), grandam of Macedoine. Celestine.—Bay filly by Foxbridge from Lady Whirlwind, by Whirlwind —Cione, by Catmint—Hyades, by Hymettus—Straga (by Birkenhead), thus a half-sister to Mayfair and Barry Boy, both of whom are winners. The grandam, Cione, is a sister to Prodice (G.N. Oaks, Guineas, Avondale Guineas), dam of Gallio (G.N. Guineas, Trentham Stakes, and Harcourt Stakes), Te Hero (G.N. Foal Stakes and Royal Stakes), and Te Hinemoa. This is a well-performed family. Diatomous Girl.—Bay filly by Diatomous from Ross's Gift, -by Tea Tray— Lucien, by Lucullus—Congress, by Hierarch—Te Huinga (by Hotchkiss). Neither Ross's Gift nor her dam, Lucien, appears to have raced, nor has Waiotama Lass, the first of the progeny of Ross's Gift. However, the great-grandam, Congress, produced Towyn, the dam of Kiltowyn, Powys, and Miss Cambria, Kiltowyn being particularly useful. Pellmeer.—Chestnut filly by Vermeer from Pelisse, by Whirlwind—Pellet, by Thurnham—Pell, by Hymettus—Pellicule (by Birkenhead), thus a half-sis-ter to Silver Note, who won twice at three years. Pelisse did not race, but her dam was a sister to Croupier, a good performer on the Turf, and who is now doing y/ell at the stud. Whitford Princess.—Brown filly by Vaals from Neon, by Paper Money from imported All Bright, by Qrand Knight, thus a half-sister to the useful Exeter. All Bright was an unlucky] matron, losing three of her foals. Neon was reserved for the stud, and two of her progeny, Siglow and Sigurd, have been fair winners. -^ KNOWN AND UNKNOWN.
