COUNCIL OF SPORT

TENNIS TO AFFILIATE

After a long discussion the apnual meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association decided to affiliate with the New Zealand Council of Sport subject to it becoming an Incorporated body. The organisation of the council was criticised in many respects, including the fact that professional' bodies were not debarred from membership, and a motion that the N.Z.L.T.A, should not seek membership was finally defeated. Dr. Ifoden, who considered the council a most unbalanced body and did not approve of the principle of nationa} and provincial organisations being represented on the same council, submitted a series of resolutions. He was opposed by Mr. S. A. Cleal (Auckland) on the grounds that the council was set up to. do Its best for all athletes in the matter of grounds and accommodation, and spreading the membership of all sporting bodies. The constitution sppcifkally stated (hat there would be no interference with any sporting body. The motions were carried by 15 to 11 on a vofe of delegates, but when the vote was taken on a membership basis it was lost by 15,000 i to 7000. It was then decided that subject to the Council of Sport becoming an Incorporated body the N.Z.L.T.A. would join It. The meeting decided to grant the Hutt Valley sub-association full status as an association. I The election of officers resulted as follows:— President, Dr. J. 11. Baird (Wyndham) ; vicepresidents, presidents of affiliated associations; management committee, Messrs. A. H. Richards, H. S. Wilkinson, A. G. Henderson, J. A. McGill, H. Clay, S. J. Castle, and Dr. N. A. Foden; hon. secretary-treasurer, Mr. A. H. Richards (re-elected) ; hon. auditor, Mr. F. C.;j Austin (re-elected) ; hon. vice-presidents, Miss N. Lloyd, Mr. B. D. Andrews, and Wing Comrmander C, E. Malfroy; representative on Lawn Tennis Association, London, and International Lawn Tennis Federation, Captain G. N. Lee.
