TOBACCO SHORTAGE
The shortage of tobacco was due to the difficulty of getting' sufficient labour in the factories said the Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) at North Beach, Christchurch. To meet the problem, said the Minister, it had been decided to give the tobacco factories very high priority in regard to the'direction of girl labour. In addition, the union and the employers had agreed to work additional overtime, and further, a considerable number of girls in Wellington had been organised to give part-time work in the tobacco factories in the evenings. As a result of those efforts it was hoped there would be a substantial improvement in the situation soon. Mr. Sullivan explained that the trouble was not due to any shortage of tobacco leaf. With Dominion production and that obtained from Amei'ica the country, was very well supplied with leaf.
