ALLIED OPERATIONS

LONDON, September 3. There has been no official news of the landings in Italy since it was announced that our troops landed at 4.30 o'clock this morning. Correspondents say fighting is going on on the beaches and that our men are being supported by the guns'of Allied warships, which are shelling the coast and tightening the blockade all around the Italian peninsula. ■ A spokesman of the United States War Department at Washington announced tonight that the landings had been successful. Fighting, he said, was proceeding according to plan—the Allied plan.

A correspondent points out that the operations are still in the very early stages, and we shall have to wait until they take more definite shape before we get much news. It is highly probable that the invading forces will come up against well-trained and experienced German units, men who are likely to fight hard.
