ENTERTAINMENTS

PLAZA THEATRE. Shirley Temple, former sweetheart of other children, and the delight of their fathers and mothers, has achieved adolescence and has returned to pictures. In "Miss Annie Rooney" at the Plaza she displays the old happy confidence in her performance, with the added charm of the young > womanhood entering upon: the problems of life. The cast includes William Gargan. Guy Kibbee, Dickie Moore, and Peggy Ryan, comedienne. The supports include a travelogue, unusual occupations, and the Pacific offensive, showing Papuans as effective allies, and Japanese attacks on communications. There are a number of instances of the success of New Zealand in supplying war material, the making of the Sten gun, and launching of the sturdy "X" boats at Auckland. ■ ' MAJESTIC THEATRE. "Stand By for Action," which started at the Majestic Theatre yesterday, is a naval epic of the Pacific, and a picture of outstanding entertainment: Specifically, it is the story of the destroyer Warren on convoy, but generally It is an exciting slice out of the record of any one of a number of such gallant destroyers that I are writing history every day. Charles Laughton makes a welcome reappearance as the skipper of the Warren, and his droll humour takes the edge off the grim activity that Is part of a destroyer crew's daily existence when on service. Robert Taylor and Brian Donlevy, who fit their roles splendidly, are ■ alongside Laughton, and the three of them make a great team. The picture teems with thrills, a high light being the way in which the ship flares into action against Japanese divebombers. PARAMOUNT THEATRE. A return season of "Wutherlng Heights" at the Paramount Theatre will be appreciated by the many admirers of this classic. Emily Bronte's Immortal story of the romance between a young gipsy and an early-Victorian girl, with all its dramatic consequences, is ably interpreted by Merle Oberon in the part of Cathy and Laurence Olivier as Heathciiff, with a strong supporting cast of well-known players.
