PORTUGAL AND WAR
DENIAL OF RUMOURS
Rec. 12.30 p.m. LONDON, September 2. The Portuguese Prime Minister has issued a communique denying rumours which are being spread suggesting that Portugal will soon change her policy regarding the war. Prior to Dr. Salftzar's announcement the diplomatic correspondent of the "Evening Standard" stated that Portugal had ordered a complete mobilisation of the naval personnel and was serving call-up papers for the army, and that this might be followed by the declaration of a state of war between Portugal and Japan as a protest against the Japanese atrocities in Macao and Timor. The correspondent says that 200 Portuguese soldiers have been killed in Macao and that Portugal has received reports giving details of atrocities apainst civilians. At least three divisions of the army, he declares, are now available for dispatch to the Far East, and the Portuguese fishing fleet is being converted into armed trawlers and mine-sweepers.
