SELLING WITHOUT LICENCE
Charged at Petone today before Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., with selling intoxicating liquor without a licence, Patrick John Downey, 25, storeman, residing at the Grand National Hotel, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. Downey, who was operating from a motor-car just before the police arrived, sold two bottles of brandy wine at £1 a bottle, said Senior-Sergeant H. C. Wade, who added that the same liquor was being sold at licensed bars at 17s 6d a bottle. On searching the accused's room the police found 12 bottles of beer on which were labels of various firms, but it was discovered that the liquor was home brew, and it was ordered to be 'destroyed as unfit for human consumption. Two bottles of whisky were also found, and these and the two bottles of brandy wine which had been sold were confiscated.
Admitting two charges of theft from a dance hall, Gladys Howarth, 30, housekeeper, was convicted by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today and placed on probation for twelve months, on condition that she returns to her home in Christchurch.
